CLEARWATER FACTS

Description Clearwater is a gaff sloop owned by The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Inc, an organisation that aims to protect the Hudson River and associated waterways. The organisation was founded by singer Pete Seeger, and focuses on environmental advocacy and public education. Sails range from three hours and five hour trips to extended programs. Educational Group Sails are available for groups of students from fourth grade through to college. Public Sail Adventures take passengers on three hour sails. Private and Corporate Charters are also available. for those who want to develop their sailing skill son more extensive programs, there are Apprenticeships, Internships, and Volunteer positions on offer.
Destinations The Clearwater sails the Hudson Valley from early April until the end of October each year, visiting various places on the Hudson River, New York Harbor and western Long Island Sound.
History The sloop Clearwater was built at the Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine and was launched in 1969. She is built in the style of a Dutch sloop from the 18th and 19th centuries. The ship was based in Poughkeepsie, New York for a years, before moving to her current home at Beacon, New York in 2009. Clearwater was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2004. A Partnership between Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and Hudson River Maritime Museum will develop a home port for the sloop Clearwater at Kingston. Clearwater will be moored at the Kingston docks during the winter months.
