SUN PRINCESS FACTS
|
Description A ship belonging to Princess Cruises’ Sun Class, the Sun Princess was one of the largest cruise ships in the world at the time of its construction. She leads the fleet of sister ships Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, and the former Ocean Princess. The Sun Princess has 400 staterooms furnished with their own balconies, so passengers can witness their own exclusive vistas at the moment they wake up. Princess Cruises has upgraded the Sun Princess to include trademark features like The Sanctuary and the Movies Under the Stars outdoor theatre. The Sun Princess is a large ship, but is designed for intimacy and greater passenger freedom.
Destinations Since 2008, the Sun Princess has been permanently based in Australia sailing primarily from Sydney and Fremantle
History Built in 1995 by Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri, the Sun Princess was one of the largest cruise ships in the world at the time of its construction. The ship made news—and history—in October 2007 as the largest ship to cross under the Sydney Harbour Bridge ever as she entered the Darling Harbor for the first time. The event was a close call for the Sun Princess, as there was approximately 2.5 meters vertical clearance to spare and all because of a low tide. Since November 2007, the Sun Princess was seasonally based in Sydney, Australia, but a few months later, her permanent stay in the country was announced.
The Sun Princess also appeared on the TV show The Love Boat: The Next Wave that American actor Robert Urich top billed as Captain Jim Kennedy III.
Dining Dining at the Sun Princess is always a pleasant experience, with the ship’s chefs insisting to serve only the finest cuisine. The ship’s restaurants—as well as the whole fleet—were inducted into the distinguished Chaîne des Rôtisseurs gastronomic society. The Sun Princess’ chefs are culinary artists with their own creative menu that change every day. The Regency Dining Room is the perfect place to experience gourmet artistry, paired with excellent and attentive service from your own well-trained waiter.
The Sun Princess also boasts of specialty restaurants that passengers can’t get enough of. Put in a reservation for a delightful meal of juicy, perfectly cooked steaks at the Sterling Steakhouse, or enjoy the fresh ocean breeze as you dine in the Ultimate Balcony Dining. Passengers who lean more toward casual dining but unwilling to compromise gourmet quality will enjoy the 24-hour buffet at Horizon Court, the wine bar, patisserie, Sundaes ice cream bar with premium Häagen-Dazs flavours, and Trident Grill’s famed burgers and hotdogs.
Entertainment Even though the Sun Princess is permanently based in Australia, it’s a destination on its own with its plethora of exciting activities and attractions. On board are the Princess Theatre and Vista Show Lounge where passengers can enjoy first-run feature-length blockbusters and Broadway-quality productions enhanced by great acoustics and the best seats in the house. The Grand Casino is another popular feature, as well as comfortable lounges like the Wheelhouse Bar, the Atrium Lounge and Bar, Shooting Stars, and Rendez-Vous where you can sip cocktails with someone special or new friends.
While jumping off the ship to enjoy the ocean’s lovely blue waters is not an option, you can swim your heart out at the Riviera or Lotus Spa Pools, which are equipped with two spacious hot tubs each. The Sun Princess also offers state-of-the-art sports facilities such as advanced virtual golf simulators and an all-around sports court.
There are also a lot of activities for kids and teens on board the Sun Princess. They can hang out at The Fun Zone or the Teen Centre and enjoy the latest video games and movies, board games, arts and crafts activities, or special events designed for them.
Cabins Like most Princess Cruises ships, the Sun Princess offers seven accommodation options including interior double, ocean view obstructed, ocean view double, ocean view deluxe, ocean view with balcony, and mini-suite balcony. The suite with balcony offers 538 to 695 square feet of space, a private balcony as well as a sitting room area for entertaining.
