ALABAMA FACTS

Description The Alabama is a two-masted wooden schooner built in Pensacola, Florida, in 1926. She is owned by Black Dog Tall Ships, who offer a "Kids Cruise" program on the schooner. On these cruises the children learn life skills, and find out about maritime history. The boat can take up to 49 passengers on day trips, with 27 on overnight cruises.
Destinations "Kids Cruises" sail in the waters between Block Island and Nantucket Island, departing from The Black Dog Wharf in Vineyard Haven.
History Alabama was built in 1926 for the Mobile Bar Pilot Association of Alabama, and was originally named the Alabamian. She served as a pilot boat until1966. She was bought by Captain Robert S. Douglas in 1967 and moved to Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. She sat idle until 1994 she was refurbished and now runs cruises as part of The Black Dog Tall Ships company, along who also own the Shenandoah.
Entertainment Black Dog Tall Ships. began offering our Kids Cruise program on the schooner Shenandoah. Unlike traditional “sail training” these programs focus on allowing the next generation of sailors to fully immerse themselves in the life onboard with the emphasis on FUN! During their week onboard, our young passengers learn their maritime heritage, and many other life-skills of the sea.
